Veteran Wayne Simmonds Has Retired From Professional Hockey
Although Wayne Simmonds hasn't officially declared his retirement, the 35-year-old forward shared insights into his future in a recent interview. Simmonds revealed that, despite not having a contract after the last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he considers himself done with playing. He expressed gratitude for his fulfilling career and emphasized the importance of family time at this stage in his life.
Without a contract this season, I asked about his playing future:
"I haven't officially announced my retirement, but I'm done. I had a great career. It was the best time I've ever had in my life. Right now, it's family time."
Simmonds, who played for six teams in his 15-year NHL career, including the L.A. Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, and the Toronto Maple Leafs, specifically appreciated the opportunity to play at home in Toronto. He acknowledged that, while the playing aspect didn't meet all his hopes, he remains thankful to the organization for allowing him to don the iconic blue and white Maple Leaf jersey.
During his time with the Maple Leafs, Simmonds signed a one-year deal in October 2020, scoring seven goals and two assists in 38 games in the NHL's North Division. Later, he received a two-year extension with an annual average value of $900,000.
Throughout the final two years of his career, Simmonds played 90 games, contributing five goals and 13 assists for a total of 18 points. As he concludes his career, Simmonds leaves behind a legacy with 263 goals, 263 assists, and 526 points in 1037 NHL games. Known for his power forward and enforcer role, he also accumulated 1313 penalty minutes during his impressive career.
