Ottawa Senators forward Alex Formenton has officially turned himself in to London police in connection with a 2018 incident involving five members of the 2018 World Junior Canada team. Formenton, who recently took a leave of absence from his club in Switzerland, walked into the police headquarters accompanied by criminal defense lawyers Daniel Brown and Lindsay Board.
In a statement, Formenton's legal team asserted, "The London Police have charged several players, including Alex Formenton, in connection with an accusation made in 2018. Alex will vigorously defend his innocence and asks that people not rush to judgment without hearing all of the evidence."
Last week, London police instructed five members of the 2018 junior team to surrender in anticipation of criminal charges related to allegations at a London hotel after a Hockey Canada gala on June 18, 2018.
The incident occurred after the junior team was honored for winning gold at the world championships. None of the allegations have been tested in court, and it is unknown whether the remaining four players have surrendered.
Formenton, 24, played left wing for the Ottawa Senators until the end of the 2021-22 season. After playing in Switzerland, he took an indefinite leave of absence last week. Before joining Canada's 2018 world junior team, Formenton played for the London Knights in the OHL and was selected by Ottawa in the 2017 NHL draft.
