However, his recent decision to demote a player back to the AHL after just one NHL game has left many confused.
Jakub Vrana had been away from the game for a significant amount of time due to entering the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program for substance abuse. When he completed the program, he was sent to the AHL. Initially struggling and becoming a healthy scratch at times, he recently showed promise with a goal-scoring streak that earned him a call-up to the NHL.
On Vrana: My understanding is this move isn't to accrue additional cap space but to reduce the number of days on the roster before waivers might be required again. https://t.co/msXO7nMcWd Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) February 23, 2023
Vrana finally played his first NHL game since entering the program on Tuesday, registering two shots on goal in 11:31 of game time. Nonetheless, Yzerman has decided to send him back down to the AHL to play in Grand Rapids.
