Former NHL goaltender Kelly Hrudey strongly disagreed with the call, expressing his belief that the NHL had made the wrong decision by disallowing the goal and maintaining that stance after reviewing the play.
"It's the wrong call in my opinion," asserted Hrudey. "I thought that DeMelo clearly pushed Nylander into Hellebuyck, and so I think this is a goal that should count. I'm kind of surprised, in fact."
Former NHL defenseman Kevin Bieksa chimed in, echoing Hrudey's sentiment and highlighting that Nylander was pushed after the contact originated.
"Clearly he was pushed after, and that's where the contact originated... I'm confused about this as well, Kel," remarked Bieksa in response to Hrudey's comments. Bieksa even expressed confidence that the NHL would reverse the call upon review.
"I was confident there for Toronto," added Bieksa. "I thought it would be reversed."
