Going into the game the Maple Leafs did not have a backup goaltender due to cap space, so they signed Jett Alexander to be the emergency backup for the night.
With the game well in hand, the Maple Leafs decided to give Alexander his dream come true, and play in a National Hockey League game. With 1:10 left in the game, the Leafs put him in to finish the game.
What many would consider as a very sportsmanship move, giving someone a chance to live out their dream, atleast one of the Montreal Canadiens players did not feel that way.
Chris Wideman, a defenceman for the Habs, was not impressed with the Maple Leafs putting the goalie in during a blowout game and after the game he had the following statement for the press:
«They'll get what they deserve in a few weeks,» Habs Chris Wideman on #Leafs bringing in ATO Jett Alexander Kevin McGran (@kevin_mcgran) April 9, 2023
While I can understand why the defenceman is somewhat upset, he probably views this as a ''they can't beat us so let's not take the few minutes of a professional game seriously'' - But I see nothing wrong with having the opportunity to give someone a chance to play in the NHL.
Safe to say that Wideman also believes the Maple Leafs will be going home early in the first round again this season.
