In recent years, the NHL's overtime strategy among teams has been to hold on to possession of the puck for as long as you can.
In some cases this would mean completely retreating after a rush was not successful. This leads to a lot of low-event moments during NHL overtime.
The creation of 3 on 3 overtime was meant to see speed and high-flying action that would lead to goals. Unfortunately for fans, the teams have found ways to prioritize other things over entertainment value.
Now the NHL is looking to step in and create a few rules that could incentivize teams to play more aggressively.
Today a post on X from Frank Seravalli has been seen going around. The post confirms a couple of new rules the NHL is currently considering to improve overtime. Both are taken from another North American professional sport.
The two current solutions on the table both come from basketball. The first is a shot clock. The second is the idea of a center ice violation. Where the team once they cross the center ice line can't go back out again on purpose.
These rules would force teams possessing the puck to attack the offensive zone and the net. It could create chances both ways and return the NHL to its overtime glory days.
