As discussed on TSN 1050's First Up, there seems to be mutual interest between the Toronto Maple Leafs and free agent forward Corey Perry, according to former NHLer Carlo Colaiacovo.
Perry, who recently became a UFA after the Chicago Blackhawks released him following an "alcohol-fueled incident," has been cleared by commissioner Gary Bettman to return to the NHL.
Perry has a history of being a challenging opponent for the Leafs, notably with the Montreal Canadiens in the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs and later with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the following year. Despite being 38 and not maintaining the offensive output of his prime, Perry could provide grit and additional offense in a bottom-six role. His recent stint with the Blackhawks, where he scored four goals and nine points in 16 games, was seen as a mentorship role for rising star Connor Bedard.
Considering the Leafs limited cap space, Perry could be an affordable addition, although the team would need to navigate its current cap situation. With players like Ryan Reaves and Joseph Woll on injured reserve and significant LTIR allocations for Jake Muzzin, John Klingberg, and Matt Murray, the Leafs might need to make strategic moves, such as trading players or contracts, to accommodate Perry's potential signing.
