The team placed the veteran on waivers prior to the All-Star break. Since then, he has decided that he does not want to report to the AHL and as such the Rangers have agreed to a mutual contract termination.
Bonino played in 45 games with year with the Rangers recording just 1 goal and 5 points in that span. He has always been more of a defensive forward but even that part of his game has fallen off according to advanced analytics. However, there may still be a place for him in the NHL.
Following the completion of his contract termination, Bonino will become an unrestricted free agent. Reportedly, there are multiple teams that have already inquired about his availability according to NHL insider Chris Johnston.
This is likely the last chance the 35-year-old center will get in the NHL. He's shown signs of rapid decline over the past couple of seasons and he surely isn't getting any younger. Stay tuned too see if he signs with a new team before the March 8th deadline.
