The hockey world is mourning the loss of ex Winnipeg Jets draft pick Jason Cirone who passed away at 53 from cancer.

This sad news comes shortly after the tragic passing of Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau adding more grief to hockey fans. Cirone who was drafted in the 3rd round & 46th overall by the Jets in 1989, played in just 3 NHL games but built a successful career in European leagues particularly in Italy and Germany.

Before being drafted, Cirone had a standout junior career in the OHL, scoring 130 goals and 150 assists in 212 games for the Cornwall Royals and Windsor Spitfires. Though he didn't have a long NHL career, he found success in the AHL, IHL & the ECHL which including a standout 42 goal season with Kansas City in 1998-1999. Despite his talent he never got many opportunities in the NHL which was unfortunate.

After retiring in 2008, Cirone continued to contribute to the game, coaching both men's and women's teams at Midland University in 2013. He also represented Team Italy in international play, becoming a key figure for Italian hockey.

This is heartbreaking news as the hockey community prepares for a new season. We at Hockey Patrol send our deepest condolences to Jason Cirone's family and honor his legacy in the sport. He was a hero in Italian hockey and will be greatly missed.
