The role of a Zamboni driver is essential for maintaining high quality ice at hockey rinks but a recent incident in Quebec took a troubling turn when a driver allegedly under the influence caused significant damage by crashing into the boards.

The incident which has since gone viral was caught on surveillance footage. The driver clearly impaired lost control of the Zamboni slamming it into the boards during a routine ice resurfacing. Thankfully no one was injured as the crash happened at a slow speed & there were several witnesses on the scene. However damage was reported to both a door & the boards.

Authorities report that damage «to a door and to the boards» was reported, all «in the presence of several witnesses».

According to TVA Nouvelles, the Zamboni driver was arrested by Public Security officers from the MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais. Although the driver has been released pending trial, the situation has raised concerns about how someone under the influence was allowed to operate the machine in the first place. It's possible that the rink official on duty attempted to de-escalate the situation before the crash but the driver failed to stop in time.

Fortunately this incident was not as serious as it could have been but it serves as an important reminder. Whether driving a car, a Zamboni or any other type of vehicle consuming alcohol beforehand can lead to dangerous accidents. In this case the damage was confined to property but the outcome could have been far worse.
