At 34 Schultz has signed with HC Lugano of the Swiss National League marking the end of his long NHL journey. Schultz brings a wealth of experience & HC Lugano is confident that his two way defensive skills will make a big impact in the second half of their season.
Schultz began this season as a free agent after spending the last two years with the Seattle Kraken. While the Kraken could use his presence following an injury to star defenseman Vince Dunn Schultz decided not to wait for a new NHL opportunity & opted for a fresh start in Switzerland.
Originally drafted 43rd overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2008, Schultz began his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers after negotiations with the Ducks fell through. In 2016 he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins where he won back-to-back Stanley Cups. He later played for the Washington Capitals before joining Seattle.
Although the Kraken loaded up on veteran players, adding Chandler Stephenson and Brandon Montour, Schultz chose a new path. Rumors circulated that James van Riemsdyk might join Seattle on a professional tryout, but he ultimately signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets instead.
Schultz's move to Switzerland signals the next chapter in his impressive hockey career, where his leadership and skill will now benefit HC Lugano.
