According to a recent article from The Hockey Writers, the Boston Bruins, St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers are all still in the hunt for Barrie. Each of these teams could benefit from the addition of a veteran puck-moving defenseman, with Barrie likely fitting in as a 6th or 7th defenseman.
Daily Faceoff reports that Barrie is expected to sign a one-year contract, rather than a professional tryout like some other players. The contract would likely be for the league minimum salary.
Barrie's best years were with the Edmonton Oilers and earlier in his career, but things went downhill after his trade to the Nashville Predators. Last season was particularly rough for Barrie, as he struggled with injuries, was a healthy scratch, and only played in 40 games. He managed just one goal and 14 assists, with a disappointing -10 plus/minus. While the Predators made the playoffs, Barrie only played in one game and sat out the rest.
In contrast, Barrie's time with the Oilers was much more successful, where he consistently reached 40 points or more for three straight seasons and excelled on the power play.
Despite his recent struggles, Barrie remains a beloved figure in the locker room and among fans. At 33 years old, he may be past his peak, but he still has plenty to offer for a few more years. A fresh start with a new team could be just what he needs to reignite his career.
