The Bruins had a tough decision to make with their goalies this summer. While it was expected that Jeremy Swayman would take over as the starter next season, few saw the trade of Linus Ullmark happening so quickly.
Just before Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on June 24th, the Bruins traded Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Joonas Korpisalo and a 2024 first-round pick.
On the 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman explained the reason behind Boston's quick decision: Ullmark could have changed his no-trade list on July 1st (Canada Day), which pushed the team to act fast.
Now, Ullmark has the chance to help the Senators return to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Ottawa has been searching for a true starting goalie, and Ullmark could be the answer. He'll have the starting job right away, without the 1A/1B setup he dealt with in Boston.
Meanwhile, Bruins GM Don Sweeney now faces the task of getting Jeremy Swayman under contract before training camp, as the team looks to avoid starting the season with Korpisalo and Brandon Bussi as their goalie tandem.
