The New York Islanders have started the season strong with a 2-1-2 record but made a surprising move today by putting forward Julien Gauthier on waivers. According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman the 27 year old former first round pick is now available for other teams to claim.
Gauthier played 27 games for the Islanders last season scoring 5 goals & contributing 9 points. However after being featured in just one game this season the team decided to waive him. If he clears waivers it's expected he'll return to the AHL's Bridgeport Islanders where he played 17 games last year.
In addition to Gauthier, 23 year old Adam Beckman a former third round pick of the Minnesota Wild was also placed on waivers. Beckman joined the New Jersey Devils this offseason but hasn't seen any game action so far. He is likely headed to the AHL as well if he clears waivers.
Neither player has made a significant impact in the NHL yet but they might attract interest from teams seeking depth or a player to develop. While it's unlikely either will be claimed they could still serve as valuable assets in the AHL for their organizations. For now both players will wait as teams have a short window to decide whether to add them to their rosters.
Stay tuned for more updates.
