There has been a lot of speculation about a trade in the works between the Edmonton Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens. Pierre Lebrun and Darren Dreger have provided us with an update on what exactly what is going on.

Pierre Lebrun Silences Trade Rumor Between The Edmonton Oilers And Montreal Canadiens

TSN Insider Pierre Lebrun discloses that the Oilers have not had any recent trade talks with the Montreal Canadiens regarding their three goaltenders. He also says that it doesn't mean that they won't talk in the future so it's possible that this situation gets revisited.

The Oilers have reportedly been scouting the Canadiens' trio of goalies, Sam Montembeault, Jake Allen, and Cayden Primeau. However, the Oilers are also actively exploring options across the league to secure an upgraded goaltending situation. Canadiens GM Kent Hughes is believed to have set a high asking price, possibly capitalizing on the urgency of the Oilers in their search for a goaltender.

Insider Darren Dreger Gives His Take On The Situation Between The Oilers And Canadiens

According to TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger, there is speculation that the Edmonton Oilers could be in talks to acquire Montreal goalie Samuel Montembeault, with the potential for the deal to evolve into a larger blockbuster package.

Dreger shared his thoughts on Montreal radio, stating, "Who do you do? I am sure Kenny Holland is beating the phones trying to figure out, Is there a trade for fit out there?'" Montembeault, currently on a one-year deal at $1 million, is part of a three-goalie rotation in Montreal alongside Jake Allen and Cayden Primeau.

Dreger emphasized that if Montreal is open to trading Montembeault, the return from Edmonton would need to be "substantial." In connecting the dots, he suggested a possible trade involving Xavier Bourgault and potentially more to capture the attention of Canadiens' management led by Kent Hughes. Dreger hinted that given the situation with the Edmonton Oilers, the deal could potentially be expanded into something more significant, even labeled as a "blockbuster."
