The Golden Knights traded Reilly Smith to the Penguins last offseason in an effort to keep the team cap compliant. Smith has a 5 million dollar cap hit for the remainder of the season, as well as next season. The Penguins brought him in as part of their effort to remain competitive for a playoff spot. The team has had mixed results so far, partially due to Smith himself, who is on pace for one of the worst years of his career. The veteran forward currently has 20 points in 41 games.
Now the veteran winger is reportedly unhappy with his situation in Pittsburgh. He apparently never wanted to be traded in the first place and wishes he was still on the Vegas Golden Knights.
With a little bit of luck, he just might get exactly what he wants.
The 32-year-old winger reportedly never wanted to be traded away from Vegas in the first place. Now he may actually find himself back with his former club less than a season after they traded him away. New reports from the Athletic suggest that the defending Stanley Cup champions are actually interested in a reunion with Smith if they can make it work under the cap.
Smith had some of the best years of his career with Vegas where he recorded 124 goals and 286 points in 399 games with the team. Notably, he also helped the team win its first Stanley Cup Championship just last season. Fans would certainly appreciate a reunion and it seems Smith would too. Now we just have to wait to see if the team can figure out how to make it work.
