The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a significant offer for 34-year-old defenseman Chris Tanev. However, the Flames haven't accepted it yet. They're reportedly holding out for a first-round pick in exchange for Tanev, who is considered a veteran player.
While the Leafs have offered multiple draft picks for Tanev, they're hesitant to part with another first-round pick, especially considering their limited number of picks. This hesitation could affect the chances of acquiring another Flames defenseman, Noah Hanifin.
Insider Chris Johnston has confirmed that Tanev is the Leafs primary trade target. However, it's unclear if the team is willing to meet the Flames demand for a first-round pick.
Tanev has posted one goal and 12 points in 53 games with the Flames this season. Throughout his NHL career, spanning between Vancouver and Calgary, he has accumulated 32 goals and 183 points across 770 games, with a solid career rating of +110 and just 182 penalty minutes.
So, it seems like the Leafs might need to explore other options. They could look at Sean Walker from the Philadelphia Flyers or Alexandre Carrier from the Nashville Predators. Both are pending free agents with lower cap hits than Tanev, making them potentially more affordable.
Some fans suggested Noah Hanifin from the Flames as an alternative, but he has a no-trade list that includes Canadian teams, so he's not an option for Toronto.
It will be interesting to see what happens before the trade deadline.
Stay tuned.
