The Chicago Blackhawks may soon address their second-line center gap with a significant acquisition. According to Brooke LoFurno of Chicago Hockey Now, insider Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period and Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman suggest that the Blackhawks are seriously interested in Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras, a name often floated in trade rumors since last season.
Zegras once seen as a cornerstone for the Ducks has faced a decline in his role & production following an injury plagued 2023-24 season. Despite his potential he's been moved to the wing this season where he has struggled managing just two points in eight games. The 23-year-old carries a $5.75 million average annual salary through 2025-26, a manageable cap hit for the Blackhawks if they decide to make a move.
Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson has expressed openness to using his team's impressive draft capital with 13 picks in the first three rounds over the next three years including two first rounders in 2025 for the right player. LoFurno believes that with the Blackhawks stockpile of picks Davidson may be willing to part with one for a player like Zegra, especially if it solidifies the team's long term lineup.
While Zegras could bring offensive flair to Chicago questions remain about his fit in the demanding second line center role. Still a fresh start might be just what Zegras needs to regain his early career promise making this trade possibility one to watch closely.
