Following a disappointing start to the season the Rangers sent Rempe down to the AHL to gain more ice time after he was scratched for all but two NHL games logging just 3:40 & 7:37 in those appearances.
Despite this the Rangers called Rempe back up to the NHL today. His AHL performance was underwhelming, with no points, two shots on goal, and a -3 rating across two games.
Fans were surprised at the quick recall, as it seemed he had little chance to make a real impact in Hartford. Jake Leschyshyn who had replaced Rempe in the Rangers lineup was sent back to the AHL yesterday after being scratched in the last game against the Anaheim Ducks.
When asked about his brief time in the AHL, Rempe admitted he enjoyed getting more minutes and playing in various situations.
Rempe's return brings a physical presence to the Rangers lineup, forcing opponents to adapt their play. Known for his enforcer style Rempe makes opposing players nervous which can disrupt their rhythm & create opportunities for his team. His physicality also energizes his teammates & helps set the tone.
The timing is significant as the Rangers prepare to face the Washington Capitals. It's their first meeting since New York eliminated Washington in last year's playoffs. A loss would allow the Capitals to close within one point of the Rangers in the Metropolitan Division, while a win would give New York the top spot in the division over the New Jersey Devils.
