Calls to send the Colorado Avalanche's struggling number-one goaltender Alexandar Georgiev to the AHL have started to emerge.

It hasn't been an easy start to the season for the Avalanche. Despite having five players who tallied a point per game or more this year, they lost their first four games because of goalie struggles.

Head coach Jared Bednar mentioned it in a press conference: Georgiev is the man trusted to lead the Avs to the playoffs:

"I get that there's a level of frustration, but [Georgiev], he's our guy. He's our starter. «I have full faith that he has the ability, the talent, the work ethic to bounce back and win us hockey games. It's a mental game right now."

Since Georgiev's last game on October 18th, Justus Annunen has played in every game for the Avs and won four the last four straight.

With Annunen's performances and Georgiev's struggles, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Avs management make an important decision soon.

According to multiple reports online, Colorado could send Georgiev to the AHL, with the Colorado Eagles, for a conditioning stint.

A reporter suggested this idea, saying the goalie could take some time to clear his mind and find his rhythm far from the spotlights:

The Avs need to send Georgiev down to the Eagles.
He'll see most of the minutes in the crease, he'll be able to build some confidence playing against minor league players, and he can clear his mind without the bright lights and constant media coverage that being an NHL player brings.

Last week, the Pittsburgh Penguins did the same thing with their number one goalie Tristan Jarry.

He and Georgiev have similar numbers this season. Jarry had a .836 SV% and 5.47 GAA before being sent down. As for Georgiev, he has a .810 SV% and a 4.99 GAA.

Georgiev is set to return to the lineup tonight, after Annunen's four straight wins. It'll be interesting to see what happens on the ice, and what happens if Georgiev loses the game.
