Former Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup champion tragically passes away
The Detroit Red Wings community is mourning the loss of Sergei Mnatsakanov, a former team masseur, who has sadly passed away.
Sergei was a significant part of the Red Wings' family and served as a massage therapist for the team. His life took a devastating turn after a limousine crash just days following Detroit's Stanley Cup win in 1997.
The accident left him paralyzed and also involved Vladimir Konstantinov and Slava Fetisov. Fetisov recovered and returned to play, but Konstantinov's career was cut short due to severe head injuries.
A touching story showing how much he meant to them came following their Cup triumph.
The Wings were struggling to get Mnatsakanov, onto the plane to go visit the White House in his wheelchair. The whole team was emotional, and it appeared like they might miss their trip.
Then, in came Marty Lapointe. Without hesitation, he stepped up and scooped Sergei-who weighed around 300 pounds-into his arms, lifting him onto the plane. It was a touching moment that showed just how tight-knit this family is, meaning fans should expect their fallen loved one to be honored properly this season.
John Wharton, the team's former athletic therapist, expressed his sorrow over the loss, calling it a sad day for all who knew Sergei.
"Natsa" was a great massage therapist, a tremendous team asset and even better person.
He called me 'moy shef' (my chief) but I was the one who looked up to him.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sergei's family and loved ones during this difficult time. His spirit and strength will always be remembered in the Red Wings' community.
