According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the Detroit Red Wings and their GM, Steve Yzerman, could have gotten more in return for Jake Walman. Seravalli believes Yzerman didn't do his due diligence before trading the fan-favorite defenseman to the San Jose Sharks.
Walman played a crucial role on the Red Wings' blue line over the past three seasons, especially as a partner to young defensive star Moritz Seider.
The Red Wings traded Walman, along with a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, to the Sharks for future considerations. This move surprised many in the hockey world, as it seemed to be a salary cap dump, and many believed Detroit could have received much more in return.
Jake Walman, 28, still has two years remaining on his current contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $3.4 million. He became a fan favorite after his memorable "griddy" goal celebration, which he performed after scoring key goals.
Last season, Walman scored 21 points in 63 games and averaged 16:46 of ice time per game. The Sharks are getting a beloved defenseman who will likely continue his celebratory dance whenever he scores. San Jose Sharks fans and teammates are sure to grow to love him quickly!
