The Edmonton Oilers have been one of the biggest disasters in the NHL this season. Prior to the season starting, many picked them to be one of the best teams in the league. Several analysts even picked them to win the Stanley Cup. Instead, things have gone the exact opposite direction as the team is currently in the draft lottery.

Edmonton Oilers Season In Serious Jeopardy

As of today, the Oilers are 5-11-1, good for 7th in the Pacific division and 30th overall in the NHL by points. The team has already made drastic moves when they sent Jack Campbell down to the AHL and fired head coach Jay Woodcroft.
Since Woodcroft's firing, the Oilers are 2-2 although they have not really been playing significantly better than they did under Woodcroft. At this point it is becoming more and more likely that the team will miss the playoffs entirely and now people are starting to ask questions about the future of the Oiler's best players.

NHL Insider Hints At Draisaitl Leaving Edmonton Oilers

Today, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman dropped a hint suggesting that Leon Draisaitl may very well request a trade from the Oilers if the team cannot get their act together soon.
Friedman on TJMS: "Sooner or later you start to look at the long-term picture, like uh oh, Draisaitl, what's he thinking right now? I don't believe you're there yet, but it's there, it's not too far into the horizon if this doesn't turn around"

Friedman on the Oilers (TJMS): "They're in a unique point this year because of the contract calendar. The contract calendar is going to force them into a lot of difficult conversations and decisions..."

TSN1050's Overdrive also discussed the state of the Oilers this morning. They correctly pointed out that the Oilers missing the playoffs in a year in which Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are both in their prime would be unacceptable.
"The idea that Edmonton is legitimately facing the possibility of missing the playoffs, it is real. If you miss a prime season of McDavid and Draisaitl, that is inexcusable."

Hayes, Noodles and O-Dog discuss the Oilers' rocky dynamic and the state of the team.

The Oilers play their next game tomorrow at 4PM PST as they take on the Carolina Hurricanes in Carolina.
