The Edmonton Oilers are actively seeking ways to improve and manage salary cap constraints. There has been recent reports they are shopping defenseman Philip Broberg in trade discussions. However, the focus might not solely be on swapping Broberg, as recent reports suggest the Oilers are keen on moving goaltender Jack Campbell and his $5 million cap hit.
According to TFP's David Pagnotta, the Oilers are open to trading Campbell but recognize the need to sweeten the deal. The proposed package could include a first-round pick and potentially another player to entice another team to take on Campbell's full contract. Campbell is currently playing in the AHL and is in the second season of a five-year, $25 million contract, with a 10-team no-trade list.
Broberg's agent, Darren Ferris, is reportedly involved in facilitating a potential move. TSN's Darren Dreger noted that Broberg, whose entry-level contract expires after this season, might be part of a deal involving Campbell.
The Oilers, currently in LTIR overage space, are navigating salary cap challenges. Any significant move is likely to result in the departure of a roster player. Sending Campbell to the AHL has provided some cap flexibility, reducing his hit to $3.85 million from $5 million.
Oilers GM Ken Holland has been actively exploring the trade market for various assets, including a goaltender, a physical top-four defenseman, and a third-line center since November.
