Dr. Mulder was asked about the nature of Carey Price's career-ending injury and what he had to say what quite revealing.

"He had two injuries. He had an injury to the meniscus, which is the cartilage in the joint, and we sent him to New York Dr. Marks operated on him, tidied up the meniscus, and during the operation he discovered that the important part of the femur, the bone in your leg had lost all its cartilage. About the size of a 50 cent piece, and so that was a complete surprise to us. That's what really has ended his career."

He not only confirms that it was the knee injury that ended his career, but also goes into details. Once a joint loses all its cartilage, there is no getting it back. Given how demanding the goalie position in hockey is, especially on your knees, it stands to reason that this injury ended Price's career on the ice for good.

Official NHL Doctor Calls on NHL To Ban Fighting

Dr. Mulder went on to discuss advancements in player safety as well as the importance of protecting player's heads. He acknowledges the league's advancements in technology, specifically mentioning helmet design, while also mentioning that fighting is still very dangerous and serves no real purpose other than to injure yourself and an opponent.

"Well I think I'm looking at it from the point of view of 1963 versus 2023, 60 years later. The league has made tremendous progress in terms of protective equipment. Helmets are much better, all the padding is much more protective. The whole league is aware of a concussion and how serious it can be and so I think we've made progress in that regard... We're not there yet. I would like to see fighting removed from the game or changed drastically. Do you know what the purpose of a fight is? Its to produce a concussion. Its to produce a brain injury."
