The Carolina Hurricanes are in a very unusual spot with their goaltending situation. With Fredrick Andersen going on injured reserve for an unknown period of time, the team now faces some tough decisions.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Veteran NHL Goaltender

NHL insider Pierre Lebrun reported today that the Hurricanes brought in Jaroslav Halak on a professional tryout contract before they even knew the status of Andersen. It is a move that gives the team some insurance and depth.

"The Canes had been talking to Halak's camp for the past two weeks, which is to say they were going to bring him in on a tryout even before they knew about Andersen's situation."

Lebrun also hinted at the fact that the team is likely considering trade options, particularly with teams that are currently running with three goalies on the NHL roster. One such team is the Montreal Canadiens.

"I suspect the Canes will also keep an eye on NHL teams with three goalies on their rosters, like Detroit and Montreal. I think there's as much chance they trade for a goalie as there is signing Halak to an NHL contract."
