This could be a major turning point for the Rangers & their star goalie. Reports confirm Shesterkin has turned down an extension that would have made him the highest paid goalie in the history of the NHL.
Back in September, it was reported that the New York Rangers were ready to offer Shesterkin a new deal worth more than the $10.5 million per year made by Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens. According to insider Kevin Weekes, the Rangers offered an eight-year, $88 million contract, which averages $11 million per year. Shesterkin declined.
Earlier this summer, reports indicated that Shesterkin was seeking a contract with an annual value of at least $12 million. It seems he's sticking with that demand, even though it would heavily impact the Rangers salary cap.
Shesterkin's current contract, which ends after this season, pays him $5.66 million per year. With his outstanding performance including being named a favorite for the Vezina Trophy the Rangers will find it tough to negotiate a lower figure. Once his contract expires Shesterkin becomes a restricted free agent meaning he can negotiate with other NHL teams. If that happens there will be no shortage of interest putting the Rangers in a difficult position.
Stay tuned for more updates.
