On Friday, the Penguins said they let Knyzhov go from the tryout. He signed the agreement earlier this summer but didn't take part in the first two preseason matches.
Knyzhov is listed at 6-foot-3 and weighs 222 pounds. He plays defense and shoots left. In past NHL games he showed his talent but Pittsburgh still decided to release him before the preseason finished. Because he missed the early games maybe he lost his chance to show what he could do.
The Penguins signed him on August 22 to a tryout contract and he was the only player they brought in like that for this camp. Those tryouts usually help teams decide if a player should stay. His short run with the Penguins ended earlier than expected.
Knyzhov, 26, has spent the last five seasons with the San Jose Sharks. Last season, he played 10 NHL games, recording one assist and averaging 17:39 of ice time per game. His season was limited by an extended recovery from injury.
With Knyzhov's release, the Penguins now have 51 players left on their training camp roster, with more cuts expected as they prepare for the regular season.
Stay tuned for more news as the season approaches.
