A day before free agency, the Hurricanes have moved the rights to pending UFA Jake Guentzel to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick.
Tampa Bay, potentially losing captain Steven Stamkos, adds Guentzel as a possible top-line option if Stamkos doesn't return. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman projects Guentzel to receive an eight-year contract with an $8 million average annual value (AAV).
The Lightning cleared cap space during the draft by trading defenseman Mikhail Sergachev to the Utah Hockey Club.
Guentzel, 29, had 30 goals, 47 assists, and 77 points in 67 games this season for the Penguins and Hurricanes.
