A former first-round pick could soon secure a new contract with the team.
Much like the Edmonton Oilers' successful PTO with Sam Gagner, Toronto seems poised for a similar outcome as former first-round selection Kieffer Bellows is on the verge of securing a new NHL contract with the Maple Leafs.
Several weeks ago, the team extended a PTO offer to Bellows with the AHL's Toronto Marlies. In just five games, he has an impressive tally of 4 goals and 7 points.
While established players like Ryan Reaves and others are going through a hard time, Bellows, who was chosen just 18 picks after Auston Matthews in the 2016 NHL Draft, may soon fill that void.
When questioned by Mark Masters about the expectations set by the Maple Leafs management during his AHL PTO, the 25-year-old forward had this to say:
While nothing is certain, Bellows evidently has the determination and skill necessary for success, making it only a matter of time until he comes back in the NHL.
