In a significant development, the NHL has imposed a harsh penalty on one of its Canadian franchises.
The Ottawa Senators will be forced to forfeit one of their first-round draft picks within the next three draft years as a consequence of the Evgeni Dadonov trade.
The situation arose when the Senators traded Evgeni Dadonov to the Vegas Golden Knights during the summer of 2021, and it's worth noting that Dadonov had a modified no-trade clause at the time.
Under such clauses, the player has the ability to specify teams to which they do not wish to be traded. The Vegas Golden Knights believed that Dadonov had not provided his list for the 2021-22 season and attempted to trade him to the Anaheim Ducks.
However, it was revealed that Dadonov had indeed submitted his list to the Senators, who failed to share this information with the Golden Knights. Subsequently, the NHL intervened and vetoed the trade to the Ducks, resulting in the punitive action against the Senators.
