In the final two minutes of the Ducks Sharks pre-season game last night, the Sharks were down 4-2 and had pulled their goalie to try and tie the game. After a missed empty net attempt by Glenn Gawdin, the puck can be seen ringing around the boards towards the Sharks' bench.
This is when Alex Killorn took a run at Filip Zedina in a dangerous hit near the sideboards.
Obviously, hockey is a fast game, and in pre-season games, many young or depth players are doing everything they can to make a roster. This can sometimes end up in ugly plays as some players take it too far.
In this situation, we have a veteran NHLer Alex Killorn taking an unnecessary run at another NHL veteran Filip Zadina when time is running out in a meaningless game. This type of hit would warrant a suspension in the regular season, and I would imagine that the NHL is going to take a closer look given the circumstances of the game.
Some are saying that this hit was in retaliation to an earlier play, in which case it should be arguably more likely that the NHL looks into the play as it looks more like an attempt to injure instead of a bad hit.
