Filip Chytil has been out of the Rangers lineup since November 2nd, suffering what appears to be the fourth concussion of his NHL career. Chytil is just 24 years old, and the repeated head injuries raise questions about his future in the NHL and his long-term health.
Chytil played in 10 games this season so far, and despite not recording a goal, he has tallied 6 assists. Chytil was eligible to come off LTIR Sunday, however, he did not.
While many are hoping for Chytil's return to New York, there is a bigger question as to whether the risk is worth it at all. Repeated concussions can cause significant damage to players' quality of life well after they stop playing hockey. While it is likely Chytil wants to return, there needs to be some precaution both by him and the Rangers to make sure that his long-term health and quality of life is taken care of.
