Debrincat had established himself as a dynamic offensive threat during his time with the Blackhawks. He had scored 40 or more goals in two seasons and was known for his strong partnership with fellow forwards Patrick Kane and Dylan Strome. However, the Senators were taking a risk when they traded for Debrincat, as he was an upcoming restricted free agent with a qualifying offer of $9,000,000.
The Senators were hoping that Debrincat would continue his prolific goal-scoring pace in their lineup. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case this season. Although Debrincat has been a productive player, scoring 28 goals and 66 points, his performance has not lived up to expectations. The Senators were hoping that Debrincat would develop even further and reach nearly 50 goals in a season, but that hasn't been the case. Despite this, Debrincat is still a valuable asset for the Senators and has plenty of time to reach his full potential.
While many see Debrincat as still growing and will become worth the qualifying offer on his contract, one former NHL player definitely does not:
A player looking for anything north of 9 million dollars should be driving the line he's playing on. Let's stop pretending it's a linemate issue. https://t.co/QubtbvMoU0 Marc Methot (@MarcMethot3) March 13, 2023
