Patrick Kane was traded for the first time in his career a season ago, and now, another first is upon us, as he will finally choose a new team in free agency for the first time in his career.
A decision from Patrick Kane is coming very soon
After undergoing off-season hip surgery, Patrick Kane is nearing a return to the NHL, and with many teams interested, the process to officially recruit him begins this week, where as many as 8 teams will chat with him in order to recruit him for the 2023-24 campaign.
While Brisson told me recently that he would try to limit the list to five or six teams, it sounds like that's grown to seven or eight as clubs try to get in on it.
One club that hopes to remain part of the mix is Kane's hometown Buffalo Sabres.
«Yeah we are a team that checked in on him once he became a free agent, and we asked them to keep us posted and that's what they've done,» Sabres GM Kevyn Adams said. «We'll see where it goes from there.»
Among those eight teams are likely to be the Rangers, Sabres, Panthers, Red Wings, Avalanche, Maple Leafs and others, as they all court the three-time Stanley Cup Champion to boost their hopes in 2023-24.
A decision is expected to be made as early as next week
While there's no indication yet as to who the former Blackhawks and Rangers star favours most, Darren Dreger revealed that a decision could be coming as early as next week.
The list is less than ten teams, it's probably closer to eight teams, and they're going to try and cut that down as early as the weekend. And they hope to have a final decision, perhaps in place early next week, identifying the new home for Patrick Kane and where he will return to the National Hockey League.
One of the biggest free agent dominos is seemingly about to fall, and when it does, the entire landscape of the NHL could be changed, so keep an eye on Patrick Kane over the weekend into early next week.
