Sometimes you just have to claw your way back to the level you want to be at. Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Tyler Johnson has done just that, turning a professional tryout (PTO) contract into an NHL deal.
It was back in August that Tyler Johnson signed a PTO with the Boston Bruins for training camp after not being able to find an NHL deal. However, he's now got a one-year deal with the Boston Bruins worth $775,000.
Tyler Johnson won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021, and played in just about every game of each run for the team. He was never drafted, but joined the Bolts on an entry-level contract in 2011, and remained there until being sent to the Chicago Blackhawks, long with a second-round pick in 2023, for the contract of Brent Seabrook. Johnson missed much of the 2021-22 season after having to get neck surgery and suffering a concussion.
The Boston Bruins have been in a bit of a turmoil lately following a slow start to the 2024-25 season. Star player David Pastrnak was forced to respond after head coach Jim Montgomery benched him in the third period of last night's 2-0 win over the Seattle Kraken.
