Hockey Canada mourns the loss of longtime executive & former President Bill Hay who passed away at 88 as announced by the organization on Saturday.

A former NHL player, Hay played for the Chicago Blackhawks from 1959 to 1967, earning the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year and helping the team win a Stanley Cup in 1961. In his eight seasons he scored 113 goals & 273 assists in 506 games & was part of the renowned Million Dollar Line alongside Bobby Hull & Murray Balfour. After his playing career he transitioned to executive roles including President & CEO of the Calgary Flames in the 1990s.

As President and COO of Hockey Canada, Hay played a major role in the merger of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) with Hockey Canada, shaping the program as it is today. He also founded the Bill Hay Future Leaders Program, helping college graduates break into the sports industry.

Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015 and awarded the Order of Canada in 2021, Hay's contributions extended beyond his career on the ice. His work with the Hall of Fame's Seaman Hockey Resource Centre helped preserve the history of hockey in Canada.

Bill Hay's legacy lives on in the programs and players he helped develop. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and the hockey community during this time.

Rest in Peace, Bill Hay.
