Brad Treliving focused on signing and trading players outside the Core 4 during the offseason but left the third-line center position unaddressed. This spot was held by Tyler Bertuzzi, who signed with the Chicago Blackhawks in free agency.
Despite most summer trades being completed, the Maple Leafs still have options. One potential candidate is Nick Cousins, often considered the most disliked center in the NHL. Cousins brings a level of physicality that Toronto could use in their defensive play. Although his production dipped last season, he played 12 playoff games and helped the Florida Panthers secure their first Stanley Cup.
Another possibility is Chicago Blackhawks forward Rem Pitlick. While Pitlick has only 132 career NHL games under his belt, he recorded 37 points in 66 games during a season with the Minnesota Wild and Montreal Canadiens. He has spent most of his time with Chicago playing for the AHL's Rockford IceHogs.
Finally, Chris Tierney of the New Jersey Devils could be a solid choice. Although Tierney has struggled in recent years, he has two seasons with at least 40 points. His grit and veteran experience could make him a valuable replacement for Bertuzzi.
With the need for a third-line center and these players looking for contracts, Brad Treliving should consider offering a PTO (Professional Tryout) to secure the right fit before another team does.
