The preseason in the NHL is a time for teams to give young players and players on the fringe of making the NHL an opportunity. However, at some point, decisions need to be made to finalize rosters. Today several teams made the difficult decision to put a total of 23 players on waivers.
Each team in the NHL will now have 24 hours to claim these players. Of all the players placed on waivers, there are a few standouts including Grigori Denisenko, Tyce Thompson, and Egor Sokolov.
Grigori Denisenko is a former first-round pick selected by the Florida Panthers. At the time of his draft, he was incredibly highly thought of. At one point he was even compared to Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov.
Tyce Thompson is the younger brother of Buffalo Sabres superstar Tage Thompson. While not as highly drafted as Tage Thompson the younger Tyce Thompson has a similar build and high-skill type game. He has not found a way to put it together yet but could be a claim candidate.
Finally, former Ottawa Senator Egor Sokolov. During his time with the Senators, Egor Sokolov stood out for his size and physicality. It was thought that this would carry him to an NHL roster spot someday. However, he finds himself on waivers once again this time with the Utah Hockey Club.
Over the next 24 hours, these players will learn if they have a new organization to call home. If not they will likely report to the AHL and begin their work towards getting another NHL opportunity.
