The Utah Hockey Club might be ready to move on from a disappointing part of the Arizona Coyotes' history. Morgan, who has closely followed the developments in Utah and Arizona since the sale announcement, reported on Sunday that the Utah Hockey Club is considering trading Victor Soderstrom, a former first-round pick by the Coyotes.
Soderstrom, the 11th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, hasn't progressed as hoped. The 23-year-old defenseman has played only 53 NHL games, with just 3 of those last season. Instead, he spent most of last season in the American Hockey League (AHL), playing 62 games for the Tucson Roadrunners and scoring 32 points (9 goals and 23 assists).
Soderstrom's entry-level contract, which averaged $836,000 per season, has ended, and he is now a restricted free agent needing a new deal. Any team interested in acquiring him would likely want to discuss a new contract's terms before finalizing a trade.
Morgan mentioned that Utah isn't completely against the idea of re-signing Soderstrom, but the team is exploring trade possibilities.
