The Edmonton Oilers announced today that they have traded defenseman Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for young defenseman Ty Emberson.

This trade comes on the heels of the Oilers' earlier acquisition of Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks. In addition to Ceci, the Oilers are sending a third-round pick to the Sharks in return for Emberson, a promising player who recently signed a contract extension with San Jose worth $1 million annually. Emberson is expected to fit well into the Oilers' lineup.

The trade clears $3.25 million in cap space for the Oilers, which is crucial after the recent offer sheets extended to Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg by the St. Louis Blues. With the additions of Podkolzin and Emberson, the Oilers have effectively addressed the potential loss of Holloway and Broberg, leaving their next move on the offer sheets uncertain.

The St. Louis Blues may have tried to put the Oilers in a tough spot, but new GM Stan Bowman has made smart moves to navigate the situation. It's been a busy and strategic day in Edmonton.
