The Dallas Stars may have been eliminated from the playoffs by the Edmonton Oilers, but there's still news on the horizon. With the season officially over, the details of the Chris Tanev trade with the Calgary Flames have been finalized.
At the trade deadline this year, the Stars acquired Tanev from the Flames in a deal that also involved the New Jersey Devils. In exchange for Tanev's defensive talents, Dallas sent a 2nd round pick and a conditional 3rd round pick to Calgary. The condition on the 3rd round pick? The Stars had to reach the Stanley Cup Finals.
Unfortunately for Dallas, their dream run ended in the Western Conference Finals. As a result, the condition on the 3rd round pick wasn't met, and the Flames won't be receiving that extra draft choice.
While missing out on the Finals stings, there's positive news for Stars fans. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports that the Stars are prioritizing signing Tanev to a contract extension before he hits unrestricted free agency in July. Tanev's defensive play was a major factor in the Stars' playoff success, and locking him up long-term would be a huge win for the team.
If the Stars can secure Tanev's services, the trade with the Flames will look even better in hindsight. Tanev would become a cornerstone of their defense for years to come, and the Stars would have gotten a key piece for their playoff push without sacrificing a valuable future draft pick.
Stay tuned for more Stars updates as free agency approaches!
