The league has been wanting to bring back some kind of regular international competition for some time now. Given recent geopolitical issues though, there has been significant difficulties in putting something together. Over the All-Star weekend however, the league finally announced a new four nations tournament to be held next year.
This new event will replace the All-Star game. This is not a terrible idea as the NHL All-Star weekend has always been a relatively minor event compared to those of other leagues.
However, not everyone is happy with this change.
The four countries represented in the event are the USA, Canada, Finland, and Sweden. However, the NHL has many players from various countries in Europe including Czechia, Switzerland, Latvia, Germany, and Russia, among others. Players from these countries obviously will not be able to participate in the tournament, leaving out a significant chunk of NHL players, including Bruins superstar David Pastrnak. The forward revealed his thoughts about the event at the All-Star weekend.
Pasta and the rest of his countrymen will just have to wait until 2026 where they will be able to participate in the Olympics for the first time since 2014. Hopefully then the players left out of the four nations event will be able to get a little revenge.
As seen on David Pastrnak will be boycotting NHL's «4 Nation Face-Off»
