In the first period, with just four minutes remaining, New Jersey Devils' captain, Nico Hischer, deflected the puck into the defensive zone when Connor Clifton came in for a hit, making contact with Hischer's head, as shown in the tweet below.
Clifton received a match penalty for the head contact and an additional five-minute penalty for fighting. Following the game, Elliotte Friedman tweeted that Clifton would face a hearing from NHL Player Safety.
NHL Player Safety later confirmed this announcement through their own tweet, corroborating Friedman's report.
Clifton had invited over 100 of his family members to attend the game that night.
Unfortunately, they didn't get to see him play for very long.
Before the game concluded, Clifton reached out to his family to offer his apologies.
