Once highly touted for his playmaking skills & puck control Liljegren hasn't lived up to expectations since being drafted by Toronto in 2017. Despite showing flashes of potential he has struggled to secure a consistent role with the team. It seems now his time with the Leafs is officially coming to a close.
Friedman shared the news saying the Leafs are actively seeking a trade partner for Liljegren as he's fallen down the depth chart.
Liljegren's numbers with the Leafs have been decent but underwhelming for someone with his initial hype. He has 14 goals and 51 assists for 65 points in 196 games, but his defensive struggles have made him a liability on the ice. With the Leafs shifting their strategy this offseason, Liljegren's future with the team appears uncertain, especially with the return of defenseman Jani Hakanpaa on the horizon.
Although Liljegren may still feel he has more to offer, Toronto is paying him $3 million a year for inconsistent performances, which is a tough sell for a team looking to improve. Coach Craig Berube has praised Liljegren in the past but as he wasn't listed on the opening night roster it seems a trade could be the best option for both parties.
For the Maple Leafs, moving Liljegren could free up cap space or bring in assets for more pressing needs.
