John Tavares has made it clear that he wants to stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs & NHL insider Pierre LeBrun now suggests that a contract extension could be closer than expected.

This summer the Leafs made a big change by naming Auston Matthews as the new team captain replacing Tavares. While many were surprised by the decision, it's starting to feel like Matthews' team. With Tavares' contract ending soon and his captaincy gone, many are wondering what's next for him.

According to LeBrun, Tavares is likely to remain a Maple Leaf but at a reduced salary.

"There have been contract talks. There's been back and forth between Tavares' camp and the Leafs' front office. I don't think anything is imminent, though I do hear the dialogue is supposed to pick up again.

There is a mutual desire between the team and John Tavares to get something done at some point. From the Leafs' perspective, it is something they want to get done, but I don't know if they're in a rush to do it."

Tavares is an important part of the team and the Toronto community. Losing him would be a major blow to the Leafs and their fans. While he won't be signing for the league minimum, he is expected to take a pay cut from his current $11 million salary. A long-term deal worth around $5-6 million per year could be a great value for the Leafs if Tavares keeps up his performance. Alternatively, he might opt for shorter deals, giving both sides flexibility as he ages.

It looks like Tavares could finish his career as a Maple Leaf, fulfilling a dream he's had since childhood.
