NHL insider Elliotte Friedman commented on the 24-year-old defenseman, giving him high praise. He went so far as to compare him to prime Erik Karlsson.
Hughes Is A Human Highlight Reel
Hughes has been an unstoppable force this year. The blueliner was already one of the most consistent playmakers in the league last year but this year he's suddenly added an elite shot, making him one of the most dangerous offensive players in the entire league, not just among defensemen.
In fact, the defender leads the league in scoring with 30 points. No small feat for a defenseman this late into the season.
Hughes has been on a scorching heater, recording 14 points over his current eight-game point streak. Last season, a hot stretch for Hughes likely would have included 9 or 10 assists and maybe a goal. On this streak he has 4 goals and 10 assists. At this point he is certainly the Norris trophy favorite.
