Former Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard sounds off on another crazy story about controversial head coach Mike Babcock.

Babcock had a history of treating his players poorly throughout his career, which likely contributes to his current absence from the NHL. The extent of his disrespectful behavior toward players has recently come to light, particularly through the account of his former goaltender, Jimmy Howard, who played under Babcock with the Detroit Red Wings.

Howard, in a guest appearance on The Cam and Stick Podcast, explained that Babcock often took jabs at him. Howard said he took it in stride but recalled a specific incident when the team was in Phoenix to play the Coyotes during the year he was up for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the rookie of the year. Babcock told him he would have voted for Tyler Myers. Fortunately for Howard, Babcock didn't have a vote, as the award is decided by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Babcock may have been considered a good coach, or he might have just had very talented players. Despite having only one Stanley Cup to his credit, he could be seen as a coach who couldn't deliver when it mattered most. In the latter part of his career, he was criticized for mistreating both veterans and rookies. He scratched players who were about to play in significant games and was accused of treating arena staff poorly.

Whether all the alleged incidents involving Babcock occurred is up for debate, but his ultimate downfall was reportedly due to an incident after being hired by the Columbus Blue Jackets. It was reported that he asked players to show him photos on their phones.

Regardless of opinions on Mike Babcock, his coaching methods, personality traits, and difficulty with interpersonal interactions have made him unpopular in hockey circles and among players.
